Structure Dynamic Websites with PHP

Lecture 2 of 10. Class(Computer Technology E-75 Summer 2012) was carried out by David Malan of Harvard Extension School. These lectures were shot in Harvard Hall by Chris Thayer.

Today’s websites are significantly vibrant. Pages are not static HTML files however instead created by scripts and database calls. User user interfaces are more seamless, with innovations like Ajax replacing standard page reloads. This course teaches trainees how to develop dynamic websites with Ajax and with Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP (LIGHT), one of today’s most popular structures. Students discover ways to set up domain names with DNS, ways to structure pages with XHTML and CSS, how to program in JavaScript and PHP, the best ways to set up Apache and MySQL, how to develop and query databases with SQL, ways to use Ajax with both XML and JSON, and how to construct mashups. The course explores issues of security, scalability, and cross-browser support as well as discusses enterprise-level releases of sites, including third-party hosting, virtualization, colocation in data centers, firewalling, and load-balancing.
